I’m not usually a nanny state guy, but texting while you are driving is insane. It’s probably far more dangerous than people driving while a bit over the limit. At least the semi-drunk is trying not to attract the attention of the cops. The texter is oblivious to their surroundings. That’s OK while they are cruising along in a steady stream of traffic, but disastrous if there is any problem, even something as minor as the car in front tapping their brakes when they spot a speed trap.

Unfortunately, I don’t think there is an easy technological solution that wouldn’t impact innocent texters. GPS technology could prevent texting while in motion, but then passengers could not text.

Perhaps the solution is to treat texting while driving as severely as driving under the influence.
