I love to see the Democrats lose. The party I worshipped from afar, when JFK’s star was in ascent, is a sorry shadow of its robust roots. Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy would shudder to think that their Democrats would turn tail and run after the most devasting attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor. Once the nation’s tears were wiped away, that is just what they’ve done.

The correct strategy was to support the President on foreign policy. Few Democrats have followed that strategy. Instead, they’ve gone for the Vietnam template. That was most evident in their choice of John Kerry as their Presidential candidate for 2004. Honest Joe finished way behind the pack.

Robert Kagan, writing in the WPO understands why Joe has got to go:

No, Lieberman’s sin is of a different order. Lieberman stands condemned today because he didn’t recant. He didn’t say he was wrong. He didn’t turn on his former allies and condemn them. He didn’t claim to be the victim of a hoax. He didn’t try to pretend that he never supported the war in the first place. He didn’t claim to be led into support for the war by a group of writers and intellectuals whom he can now denounce. He didn’t go through a public show of agonizing and phony soul-baring and apologizing in the hopes of resuscitating his reputation, as have some noted “public intellectuals.”

John Hawkins at Right Wing News documented the ardent belief of every prominent Democrat that Saddam possesed WMD. Joe has stood by his beliefs. The rest have cut and run, and relied on the MSM to forget their previous claims.

If Joe Lieberman loses, the Democratic party will lose big time. It will no longer stand for America in WW III. It will have sacrificed any ability to tolerate diversity within its ranks. It will have sold out to big money.

We need America’s political parties to be competitive. We need each to savor victory and swallow defeat. But we need them to support America to the hilt. Joe is the last Democrat doing that. As he goes, so go the Democrats, and so Democracy in America.

Update: Joe caves
